When they were just kids, a bad hurricane devastated the original farm, which belonged to their grandparents. One of the varietals, Mundo Novo, grown by their grandfather, was almost wiped out except for a few trees. Braulio and Christian harvested the few cherries remaining and planted them; they grew. The young brothers repeated the cycle year after year. Now they are grown men with an entire mountainside of their ancestral coffee, the Mundo Novo their grandfather grew. They have their own micro mill and grow a variety of cultivars, which the family carefully processes at the peak of ripeness under the authority and direction of matriarch Dona Maria Elena. Their impeccable method of processing and attention to detail produces one of the finest washed coffees in Central Valley. This particular lot is very rare, as these Villalobos trees produce orange cherries when ripe. Identified by Dona Maria Elena and processed separately, there are limited roasts available of this special coffee. Mesfin Dabessa takes pride in picking ripe cherries and paying close attention to the process, resulting in a complex cup with clean fruit and chocolate notes. We roast this coffee lighter than we traditionally roast natural processed coffees. Even in this lighter roast profile, the body and creaminess of this cup is astounding. F1 is a newer Arabica hybrid, which Javier, among other progressive farmers, took a chance on hoping to produce a fine cup — while maintaining his farm’s integrity through various coffee disease outbreaks. Max manages the farm with his father, Claudio, who inherited it from his father in 1980.
